The Excellence Awards
The African Excellence Awards were created to honour the most outstanding achievements of communications professionals in their field. In addition to this, the Awards also provide an excellent networking forum for all attendees and take a comprehensive look at communications achievements across Africa.
The Awards are part of a global implementation of Excellence Awards, also rolled out in Asia-Pacific, North America, Latin America and Europe.

The Awards are hosted by Communication Director, an internationally-focused magazine for corporate communications, PR and public affairs. Featuring opinion pieces, case studies and reports, Communication Director is a knowledge-sharing platform for communicators. Its articles are written by senior-level professionals at some of Europe’s largest companies and organisations, as well as prominent academics and thought leaders. As the partner publication of the European Association of Communication Directors, the largest network of in-house communicators working in Europe, the magazine was a natural choice to host the Awards and to honour outstanding communications accomplishments in Europe. Communication Director is part of the Quadriga portfolio.
Meet the Jury
Maria Da Silva
Prof. Sonja Verwey
She started her Career at Boehringer Ingelheim in 1993 where she had held several regional functions till she became the Regional Public Relations Head for the Middle East region.
Then in 2006 during the integration of Schering AG, Ghada joined Bayer Healthcare as head of Regional Public Relations for the Middle East where she was responsible for 14 countries including Gulf countries, Levant, Middle East and African countries.
In 2012, she joined Sanofi as Head of Communications department where her main responsibilities cover corporate communications, corporate social responsibility, sustainability programs, media relations and employees’ engagement through volunteering CSR programs in partnerships with NGOs
Ghada was among the first women who started to work on public disease awareness; she realized the impact of a healthy population on the country’s economy. Her vision is that goal won’t be materialized without prevention of preventable diseases and early diagnosis for certain diseases through raising public awareness. Those are her two strategic imperative to improve people’s health.
Her main focus was to engage with the media through series of programs to raise awareness about what it is considered as burden such as COPD, cardio-metabolic, risk factors for cardiac events, hypertension, HCC, immunization, diabetes and the importance to improve the life style.
Ghada is graduated from Ainshams University in Egypt with a Bachelor's degree in Science and Public Relations Diploma from The American University in Cairo and MBA from Ain Shams. Lately she obtained Health Economics diploma from University of Science Technology and Maritime Transport.
An Edelman veteran with a decade of service, Rittenberry has held numerous leadership positions at the firm. Most recently, he lead Edelman’s Technology & Business Marketing practice in Chicago, where he played a lead role on a number of the agency’s key accounts, crossing both corporate and consumer-facing programs. He has also served as the client relationship manager for multiple global engagements and has supported organizations such as Bosch, Expedia, Groupon, eBay, Hilton, Motorola and Lockheed Martin.
Rittenberry is on the steering committee of the firm's Data Security & Privacy practice, helping clients navigate the increasingly complex environment surrounding the collection, use and protection of corporate and personal data. He also developed Edelman’s Emerging Technologies practice in Chicago, which fostered deep, long-lasting relationships throughout the start-up community.
His award-winning work at Edelman has been recognized by the Public Relations Society of America, International Association of Business Communicators and Business Marketing Association.
Rittenberry earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations/advertising and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Houston.
Bridget von Holdt
Sconaid joined H+K in 2008, initially as COO of H+K Middle East and Turkey, before taking responsibility as CEO for the wider region including Middle East, India, Turkey and Africa. In 2016, Sconaid took on wider EMEA responsibilities as well as continuing the growth of H+K’s African operations. Sconaid has extensive experience of managing integrated corporate communications including devising cross border corporate reputation programmes, tailored to the local sensitivities of specific markets. In addition to her corporate leadership responsibilities, she has also served as a senior client leader on multiple accounts, including dnata, Emirates, Mubadala Aerospace, MasterCard, Intel, Dubai World Trade Centre, Etihad Rail, GAFI (Egypt’s investment authority), Egypt Economic Development Conference, Coca-Cola and P&G.
Sconaid is a Business Studies graduate, majoring in marketing and market research. Sconaid was Chair of the Middle East PR Association (MEPRA) in 2012 & 2013 and a Regional Director for Injaz Al-Arab.
